the "show unread posts since last visit" does not work for me.  i had it plant a never expiring cookie, could that be the problem?

Could be Sea.  I'm not intimately familiar with the mechanics of read vs unread.  It may hold a value in a cookie it may hold a value for each message.  I'll add it to my list.
