is it supposed to the gc map or just really close?

Neither.  It is derived from the classic maps familiar to Risk players of varying decades.  The GC map is not the basis of the Strategy Gamers' original Hex-based world map (TM).   While very similar to to the GC map it is only because the GC maps seems to attempt to emulate the traditional Risk maps.  Frankly, I like the Strategy Gamers map more, but I'll leave that to the court of public opinion.

Additionally, Strategy Gamers in no way attempts to emulate GC.  GC is a fine site to play on for certain types of participants and very limited play options.  Strategy Gamers intends to be a superior strategy gaming site (I believe it already is even in pre-beta) with unmatched options, flexibility, and variety.  The true goal is to build a solid group of participants in an active gaming environment where good sportsmanship is the standard.
