I had hoped and prayed that no one would invoke the contest lest IT pass to my ears.  I've already had a near misses with

"So This is Christmas" - John Lennon.
“Wonderful Christmas Time” – Paul McCartney
"Do They Know It's Christmas?" - Band Aid (1984) < bearable due to the instrumentals.

Call me old fashioned but I'll take Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Andy Williams any day over rock artists attempting Christmas songs.  Very few can pull it off IMHO.

Listen to the Christmas classics for free on Jango.

I'm out and not just a little.  I foolishly switched from my classical station to a pop/rock station that had begun its Christmas music format for the holidays.  BAM!  There it was.  Defeated.  To add insult to injury, further returns to the channel met with all three of the others on my most not wanted list.  OTH!

I cast a suspicious eye on New Dawn's witchcraft - to invoke the contest is to make it come to life.

Is there any consolation in that at least George Michael has a quality voice?

No, not for me. I dislike the song anyway.

Hehe. Oh yeah, I heard it again, this time several weeks before Christmas. I was at work, got a call in that somebody's scanner wasn't working, and of course, it had to be one of those office ladies that have the radio on Christmas music starting sometime in August (or so it seems). Walked in and it was on some Bing Crosby or something, that song ended, and bam. Done for.

Maybe next year.

I lost the day before Thanksgiving.  Why, why must they play that infernal song?

sorry but you guys are full of it.  "Do They Know Its Christmas" is the best Christmas song ever.  Much better than the phony smarmy sugary crap dished out by rich drunk nasty "stars" like bing crosby, sinatra, como, martin, et al.  The Band Aid vocalists could actually sing, the instrumentals and arrangements were amazing,  and they cared (at least to some extent) about that of which they were singing.

No Grinchiness in here please.

It's not a song that puts you in the happy holiday mood. Neither were its sales particularly good which is the public way of saying meh.  If you like it that's wonderful.  If it puts you in the mood to support starving children in Ethiopia, as was the goal in 1984 by these "artists", that's good too.  I like the instrumental aspect which in my opinion would be best served without the vocal accompaniment.

As for the other folks you mentioned, I'm not sure that labeling White Christmas, and the many other classic and globally loved songs as phony smarmy sugary crap is accurate or fitting or even nice.  And as a footnote, Dean Martin, who has a wonderful (unsynthesized) voice, rarely drank alcohol; he'd played the drunk as part of his stage act.  He was a family man.

Now fight your instinct and be merry.  :)

I'm clean so far this year... But the next couple days will be filled with peril...

As for that Band Aid Xmas nonsense, it is good for one thing: making fun of...

I especially like the part in the song about how nothing ever grows in Africa and there's no rain and no rivers.

Hey, but it's okay, all you have to do is toast them while you're getting drunk at Christmas and everything will be swell...

At least, that's the message I got from that song. So far as there is a message behind the schlock.

T minus three hours (give or take) to Christmas Day and I'm still clean. And, not expecting to be out in public again until after Christmas, looks like I've made it. It's a Festivus miracle!

Peace - Funny how people only seem to be in the Christmas spirit if they agree with you and cdspro.  The whole point of your thread is to trash a Christmas song that I happen to like.  As soon as I disagree with your grinchiness, I'm the one not in the holiday spirit.

Actually, the whole point of the thread was to ask if I had heard that whatever the hell the name is of that Springsteen Christmas song this year. Which I didn't. For the first time ever. Oh joyous day!

I would say I blame the Mayans, but that whole thing was even dumber than whatever the hell Christmas song you're talking about... Which sucks... Which is not a slam on you, just a slam on that stupid ass song.
