Youtube!
« on: February 20, 2014, 07:40:55 AM »
I thought I'd try to shake some life into this forum by linking to a few Youtube-videos I like. This is the first one out. I so love how this is done.

There are tons of covers of it (even if this one isn't the original)
(Hint: Cup song)

Feel free to add your videos too. (But please don't spam the forum) :-)

I think this 1-minute clip is pretty amazingly well done too.

I do feel a little bit alone in here but I'll try anyway

My daughter put my attention to this one. It is amazing that he apparently has made the text, arrangement, "choreographic", edited and produced all of it himself. And he sings well too.

I give credit to the editors of your #2 and 3 videos.

I like things like these.  Best viewed in HD.

Love both of those things Peace... Makes me wanna get back out in the wilderness and take in a view like that for a few nights...

New Dawn, I'll agree with Peace's comment about crediting the editors of videos 2 & 3... really liked that travel video one... The first one just ain't my cup of tea at all, but #3 made me chuckle a bit...

I generally use YouTube for two things: old basketball games and music...

For instance, watching the Grateful Dead 4/27/77 right now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9Ft4O-qlSk

And watched 2003 Arizona/Gonzaga basketball game over the weekend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiw635EIuSc

I realize, both of those aren't exactly everybody's cup of tea, lol....

In an effort to post something that somebody else might like, this animated graphical score of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring had me completely mesmerized... And if you like this kind of thing, there is plenty more where this came from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02tkp6eeh40&index=40&list=LLBbjRTi7uGbNH6VDr9Gu9mQ

Haha, it's amazing to see that we so different tastes :-)

Did you notice that the main part of #1 was taken in one shot? It takes some planning (and probably some retakes) to get that.

#2 and #3 ARE well edited but do not forget the planning behind too. (and the amount of traveling for #2)

Peace, I do like such types of time-lapse movies but I think I've seen too many of them now to appreciate them correctly.

SOoT, I can't imagine me seeing either Grateful Dead or a basket game. But I like the animated music.

If I continue my youtube quest into other areas I think this ad is well done:

Different tastes keeps us from being a boring species.

I never really had exposure to the Dead before.  I listened to the entire performance you linked to.  Thanks  for that.  I will listen to some more perhaps with better sound quality.  Feel free to post more links.

I can understand the appeal but it would seem to be one of those can't quite describe in a single common phrase.  Their singing is not particularly good and their instrumentation didn't seem particularly special, not that most popular performers stand out in these ways either.  However, it is the sort of music that you can have on as background music which is why I can see them being particularly popular in live concerts.  Most musicians are lousy outside of the studio.  For example, Katy Perry is expert at her vocal arrangements in her pop music but live she is terrible to the degree you'd think she doesn't care a whit about her performance.  She is a true recording artist, not performing artist.  Technology does wonders.  So the Dead, not too loud, not too soft, not offensive, not kiddie oriented or candy granola.  They are just about right there in the middle.

I took interest in the commenators' discussion during the concert, noting the part where they stated that the band was just beginning using a producer for their next album, as opposed to self producing, and couldn't help but wonder if they received criticism from some fans who may have thought that this move was "going commercial".

New Dawn I liked the Honda commercial a lot.  Fun.

Also, the time lapse links were not so much about the time lapse format but rather about the subject, the night sky.  It is of particular interest to me because here on the east coast of the US, there is not much night sky to enjoy.  I'm a sci-fi junkie and the stars are wondrous to me, all nine of them that I can see here in Maryland.

Haha. Peace, in response to the "going commercial" complaint, definitely... that particular album was in the late 70s and had a more polished "pop" sound, with definite influences from the disco age... That era was bemoaned buy some as "Disco Dead."

I would warn you not to get me started talking about the Dead, because it is often hard to get me to stop talking about them once started... I would agree that their vocals aren't particularly polished and the instrumentation much the same....

But really, they're a folk band playing Americana in a jazz-influenced (improvisational) style. Two relatively infamous quotes sum up their appeal to me...

First, "they're not just the best at what they do, they're the only ones at what they do." They were famously and proudly unprofessional. They hated practicing so they'd just show up at a show and more or less wing it. Hell, where most rock bands try to keep things moving from one song to the next, there were times these guys would just stand around on stage for a while between songs, tuning and chatting before deciding what to play next...

Second, "there's nothing like a Grateful Dead concert." Listening to the music or watching a video only gives you a hint at the experience. The sounds yes, but the sights, the smells, and, yeah, let's face it, the drugs... Haha. Sensory overload.

I'd like to add a new video to this thread. I have admired the group Ok GO for a while. Not for their music which leaves me unmoved but for their videos which I often have enjoyed. Here's a link to their latest that is called 'The writing's on the wall'. Note that it is made in what seems to be just one single shot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m86ae_e_ptU
It has got almost 5 million views in just 3 days.
Other videos from them that I like are 'This too shall pass' and 'Here it goes again'. Amazing videos with what seems to be just single takes. (Even if it took several takes to get to it)
